tree of life

Sometimes projects take on a life of their own. The conversation for this kitchen commission started mid kitchen renovation—and then the pandemic turned life upside down. There was a fair amount of stopping and starting before we got down to the leaf selection and exactly what it was that could work well in a kitchen space. The piece needed to compliment dark cabinets and white tile. And we decided that extreme velcro as a mounting technique would make the piece easier to remove for cleaning without damaging the tile backsplash. I investigated some easy to clean and durable finishing techniques, worked with leaves from the client’s home and ended up with a mandala design to invoke the idea of a tree of life. Ginkgo, lilac, oak leaf hydrangea, japanese maple and dogwood make up this patinated composition.
